The Spanish Gemological Institute adds the teaching of Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence to the Diploma in Gemology program and other courses, being the first Gemology school to include this technique in its training offer . The use of Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence is increasingly common in Gemology. Technological advances have allowed the costs of spectrometers to be reduced very significantly, making their use possible not only in universities and large research centers, but also in gemological laboratories and companies dedicated to the jewelry sector. Along these lines, the pioneer company MAGI introduced its first version of the GemmoRaman-532 portable device in 2012 and the advanced version of the same device has been used in the IGE Analysis and Certification Laboratory since 2014.
The technique consists of illuminating the sample with strong light in the visible range, for which the 532 nanometer laser is used, and analyzing the Raman and photoluminescence phenomena produced in the sample. In this way, the IGE has become the first gemological school that offers the teaching of this modern technique on a routine basis and students of this academic year will now be able to learn its use along with other more traditional gemological techniques. The Gemology Diploma course is offered in several modalities (in-person, distance learning, intensive, semi-in-person...) and allows its students to learn about all the gems and the instruments and methods necessary to identify them, as well as imitations, laboratory synthesis and treatments. . These studies allow their students to work in gemological laboratories, jewelry stores, auction houses, de pieta or as gem sellers, among others. The course, which has a limited number of places, begins on October 15.
